GLOBAL REPATRIATIONS TRACKER

This chart tracks estimated global repatriations from camps, prisons, and other detention facilities in northeast Syria since the start of 2019. The camps, prisons, and other detention facilities hold people found in former Islamic State territory. To read RSI’s report on the fundamental human rights violations suffered by children and women from across the world who are currently being involuntarily held in al Hol and Roj camps, please click here.  

In February 2021, UN experts published a list of 57 countries with nationals in al Hol and Roj camps. Our Global Repatriations Tracker shows which of those countries have undertaken repatriation efforts. It is important to note that some countries had and/or have many more nationals or former nationals held in northeast Syria than other countries, and so a higher number of repatriations does not necessarily correlate with a higher proportion of nationals or former nationals repatriated.

Due to the precariousness of the situation in northeast Syria and the absence of formalised data gathering by authorities in the region and many home countries, the data in these tables are estimates only.* The numbers are drawn from publicly available media sources. You can find our raw data and all publicly available media sources here. 

The first table tracks the estimated total repatriations per country. The second table breaks down global repatriations by date.

Additional notes

*The November 2022 repatriations to Azerbaijan were from Syria, but we cannot yet confirm they were from northeast Syria.

*The United States of America's May 2024 repatriation efforts also included the resettlement of one non-US citizen.
