Rights and Security International (RSI) is seeking a Northern Ireland Human Rights Officer to engage with diverse communities and grassroots activists in Northern Ireland, supporting them in understanding human rights laws and responding to human rights advocacy opportunities.
The successful candidate will bring expertise in human rights law as well as experience engaging with a range of organisations, victims’ and survivors’ groups, and/or decision-makers in Northern Ireland in a welcoming and non-partisan manner.

Compensation: £30,000 p/a p/r, 3 days per week
Location: Remote, but candidates should be based in Belfast or Derry/Londonderry
Length of contract: 12 months

Person Specification:
RSI is looking for a passionate and experienced human rights professional who has:
A degree in law, human rights, peace and conflict studies, or another relevant field.
Experience giving trainings in, or creating user-friendly materials about, human rights laws or advocacy. Teaching experience counts.
A track record of working and forming lasting relationships with local activists or organisations in Northern Ireland.
Demonstrated understanding of the historical and present-day political, social and economic context in Northern Ireland.
A commitment to advancing the human rights of all communities in Northern Ireland.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with survivors of human rights violations and their loved ones in a professional and welcoming manner.
A strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.
An advanced degree is desirable but not required. Current authorisation to practise as a UK solicitor or barrister would be a plus.
Responsibilities:
Hold a series of positive and inclusive learning sessions throughout Northern Ireland about human rights laws and how people can use them as a practical tool for change.
Consult with communities about what types of toolkits/educational materials might assist them in enforcing their rights to express themselves and challenge injustices more effectively, then produce and share these materials.
Research and analyse new human rights issues arising in Northern Ireland as they relate to RSI’s mission of upholding human rights in the counter-terrorism context.
Help create greater opportunities for communities and groups to connect with UN experts and other international bodies.
Build RSI’s advocacy relationships with decision-makers and agencies such as Members of the Legislative Assembly, representatives from the major Northern Ireland political parties, the Police Ombudsman and the Public Prosecution Service.
