RSI and other human rights organisations wrote to the government to express their concern about its plans to give the police unaccountable powers to snoop on our lives and use our personal data.
Alongside INQUEST, Network for Police Monitoring (Netpol) and Police Spies Out Of Lives, RSI called on the government to scrap Clauses 87-89 of the Data (Use and Access) Bill.
Clauses 87-89, if enacted, would give the police additional powers to use our personal data, while removing accountability. The ongoing Undercover Policing Inquiry and revelations that the police have accessed private records 'out of curiosity' highlight why more, rather than less, accountability is necessary.
The government has revived these clauses from the former government's Data Protection and Digital Information (No. 2) Bill, which did not pass before last year's general election.
