In April 2023, Rights & Security International (RSI) hosted a hybrid roundtable in central London to discuss citizenship deprivation practices across three Council of Europe jurisdictions—the United Kingdom, France and Denmark. We brought together legal practitioners, academics and other subject matter experts to engage in comparative discussions and strategic thinking about the grounds for citizenship stripping in the three jurisdictions, and what legal arguments could be made to ensure that governments respect human rights when they revoke citizenship.
RSI urges intergovernmental bodies such as the Council of Europe and the United Nations (via the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and other entities) to investigate and make recommendations about these issues.
