On 21 November, Rights Watch (UK) wrote to the President of the UN General Assembly, along with seven other organisations, urging him to reconsider the appointment of Egypt as co-facilitator for consultations with Member States on the review of the UN Global Counter Terrorism Strategy (GCTS) next year. With Egypt’s vested interest in undermining international human rights law and accountability mechanisms relating to violations committed in the context of counter terrorism measures, such an appointment not only legitimises Egypt as a reliable partner, but also enables Egypt to further erode respect and protection of human rights in the context of countering terrorism.
